What Will Garage Doors be Like in 10 Years?

Good question, isn’t it? When contemplating the next decade’s garage trends, it may all come down to how we’ll choose to use our garage space. Will it mainly be to park cars? Or will it become an extension of the home as a game room? What about a space to DIY?

More Storage Space?

In recent years, new construction lots have been getting smaller, mainly due to the high costs of municipal infrastructure. It isn’t surprising that homeowners want to maximize the use of their remaining backyard space, keeping it as a place to barbeque, create an outdoor living room or a children’s play area. The garage then becomes a more important space for the safe storage of our goods while still trying to park our car in winter.

  • Will this bring more garages with high ceilings to maximize storage space?
  • Will we see European‑style garage doors which open laterally?

More Security?

We know that since September 11, the word “security” has become more important. Alarm systems are being integrated more often into home automation.

  • Will we see more fences and locked gates for our residential properties?
  • Speaking of security measures, will we see doors made of thicker steel, impenetrable even with a circular saw?

Simplified Access?

Home automation is becoming increasingly important in our lives, which can all be conveniently managed from our smartphone or tablet.

  • Will we start to see facial recognition systems, or even a system which recognizes our car, allowing us to use our door without pressing any buttons?

More Elaborate Door Designs?

We all dream of hiring an architect who can design a house that perfectly corresponds to our taste and reflects our personality. We all want something unique.

  • Will the garage door of the future be made by 3D printer?
  • Will garage doors and front doors start to match up their finishes and colors?

More Energy Savings?

If the garage is increasingly used as an extension to the house…

  • Will we see garage doors that become solar thermal collectors by installing photovoltaic cell panels?

And finally, while we’re dreaming of future garage trends, what about a door that is a simple light beam just like in Star Trek? The garage door could open for just a few seconds to let you in, all while protecting your garage against intruders.
