Turn Your Garage into a Productive Home Office

Home Office

Don’t have a spare bedroom to use as an office space? No problem. If you have a garage, then you can have an office. If you think that your garage is too messy, drafty and poorly lit to be a good space, think again! With a few simple modifications, you can create your ideal office away from the noise and distractions of your house.

Here are some garage office ideas to get you inspired.

How Do I Convert My Garage To An Office

A garage office conversion can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. The major factor here is whether or not you own your home. If you are a homeowner, you can make more permanent changes to your garage. If you are a renter, you have to improvise a bit more and make do with what you have.

Step One: Clearing Out The Clutter

This is your first step, and needs to be done thoroughly. You won’t be able to work effectively if stacks of boxes and junk distract you.

Take a weekend to clear out and organize your garage. Start by removing anything to be donated, discarded or recycled. If you have a lot of stuff that you just can’t bear to get rid of, you may want to consider renting a self‑storage unit. For the remaining items, utilize storage containers, cabinets, shelves and hooks to keep them organized.

If you will still be sharing your garage office space with other belongings, consider getting a folding screen to section off your workspace.

Step Two: Heating, Light And Ventilation

Make your garage office comfortable year round by making sure that it is heated in the winter and cool and ventilated during the summer.

If You Own Your Home:

You may want to consider finishing your garage with insulation and drywall. Consider running ventilation from the house, and installing a window or two in the garage, if it doesn’t have one. A well‑insulated garage door can make a big difference.

If You Rent:

You have fewer options, but you can still make it work. Keep yourself more comfortable by using a space heater in the winter and a fan during the summer. Be sure to fasten a thick blanket over the garage door to help with insulation.

Adequate light is super important. Be sure that you have bright, pleasant lighting in your workspace. An overhead light and a desk lamp should be sufficient.

Step Three: Outfitting Your Office

Make your garage office productive with a good desk and a comfortable, ergonomic chair. Be sure that you have everything you need close at hand. You may want to make a nice little sitting area with a couch or chair and a low table.

Bookshelves, filing cabinets and art for your walls are all good things to add. Make sure that you have everything properly hooked up and that cords are out of the way.

A good garage office is comfortable and safe. Whether you own or rent, taking these steps can help you have the perfect home office.
